The Persa V\u00edctor Manuel, in addition to being a historic building that houses more than one thousand shopkeepers with a wide variety of products, has stood out since its beginnings as a space that embodies great cultural wealth\u2014not only because of its heritage architecture, but also because it has opened its doors to culture in our country across all areas, in an inclusive way and open to the community.<\/p>\n

In this context, since 2016 a recovery project has been underway, focused on revitalizing this architecturally and historically significant site through urban art and the development of an active cultural agenda. The venue has become the most important circuit of urban art located inside a building in Santiago, Chile, and has established itself as a cultural hub in the southern area of the capital.<\/p>\n

This is a project that is not only innovative but also integrative in all its dimensions\u2014commercial, artistic, gastronomic, and cultural\u2014allowing culture and art to reach all social groups and different generations.<\/p>\n

Thanks to these efforts, the Persa V\u00edctor Manuel was awarded the National Innovation Award (AVONNI) in the \u201cCulture\u201d category in 2019. It is worth noting that the National Innovation Award Avonni is the most important honorary recognition in Chile, which seeks to highlight successful cases that create value through innovation in various fields.<\/p>\n

Cultural Wealth of the Persa V\u00edctor Manuel<\/h3>\n

The building that houses the iconic Persa V\u00edctor Manuel is of historic industrial character and dates back to the early 20th century. It was originally built to accommodate a tannery and a leather and footwear factory, and since its beginnings it has been organically repurposed, becoming an important part of the Franklin neighborhood, historically linked to the slaughterhouse and the traditional Huemul district.<\/p>\n

The shift in use\u2014from leather factory to flea market\u2014has, over the past decades, brought about a series of changing needs, demands for new spaces, and new complexities, which have generated a significant transformation both inside and outside the building.<\/p>\n

Alejandro \u201cMono\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez is a Chilean artist and set designer, recognized both nationally and internationally for his long career and for his colorful mural works with social themes. Many of his pieces portray the faces of immigrants and Indigenous people from the Amazon, and he uses multiple colors, as he says, \u201cto lift the spirits of Chileans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alejandro, why did you set up the Galer\u00eda Taller del Mono at the Persa?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea of my gallery is not only to exhibit works of art but also to talk about printmaking and its different techniques. This comes from a workshop I saw in Marseille, in warehouses similar to these, and the idea is that people can see how the works they like are actually made.<\/p>\n

What products do you sell?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 I sell screen prints, woodcuts, and engravings. I want to emphasize that I never produce more than 100 copies of a piece; in fact, right now I\u2019m making series of just 50, basically because I want to give exclusivity so that only 50 people own that design. The idea is not mass production, but rather variety. In addition, we are having the gallery sponsor exhibitions in cultural centers outside this district \u2014 we\u2019ve taken shows to Puente Alto, San Joaqu\u00edn, and now to Puerto Natales \u2014 all thanks to the connections and relationships we\u2019ve built here at the Persa. The Persa is more than a business; it\u2019s a place of connections.<\/p>\n

And before, where was your workshop?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My workshop was at my house, but here I\u2019m able to take advantage of other opportunities. The interesting thing about the Persa is that we are in a warehouse where other products are sold \u2014 for example, CDs, movies, and games. So people come looking for those things and then come across this. This is a gallery to spread popular art.<\/p>\n

What generation are the people who visit your gallery from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are older people, professionals who buy artworks or who are collectors, but also young people \u2014 recent graduates, professionals, etc. \u2014 who are setting up their houses or apartments and are investing in buying art, either because they\u2019ve seen murals on the streets or because they know the artist\u2019s name. That audience is very interesting.<\/p>\n

And thanks to your career, you already have a defined audience\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, there are many people who come from abroad \u2014 from Spain, France, Italy, the United States, and Canada.<\/p>\n

How did you become known in the art world?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I studied art, and I am a set designer. I worked on set designs for film and television. I am known in cinema \u2014 I designed the sets for films such as Machuca, La Fiebre del Loco, La Frontera, among others.<\/p>\n

Did you live outside of Chile for some time?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, but I travel a lot. I have painted several times in France, in Spain, and in Canada. I have painted murals in international museums.<\/p>\n

Is there a country that has inspired your works?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, Italy. I have been there several times. I\u2019ve traveled, enriched myself, learned, and also made friends \u2014 many friends.<\/p>\n

Do you enjoy being at the Persa?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have fun. If I were at home on a Saturday or Sunday, I\u2019d get bored. Here, I talk all day long.<\/p>\n

How do you see the projection of the Persa as a hub for urban art? Do you see potential?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because of the public, of course there is. Urban art is characterized by being in a place where there is a large audience. With globalization, there is a lot of exchange.<\/p>\n

Have you always dedicated yourself to the art world?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, always. With sacrifice. Many people ask me why I\u2019m not working abroad, and I tell them, \u201cThis is my country, this is my home.\u201d I used to come to this neighborhood to shop every weekend. This is an old man\u2019s project, to close circles.<\/p>\n

Is it like going back to your origins?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exactly. It has to do with territorial identities.<\/p>\n

What message would you give to people to encourage them to come see your works?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first thing they\u2019ll find is that we\u2019ll be able to talk \u2014 that is, they\u2019ll be able to speak directly with the creator, ask me questions, and I\u2019ll get to know them too. I can explain the works and the techniques. It\u2019s a gallery that spreads art, but also educates\u2026 and I learn as well.<\/p>\n

Este es un proyecto no solo innovador sino tambi\u00e9n integrador en todas las dimensiones que en el existen, comerciales, art\u00edsticas, gastron\u00f3micas y culturales; permite acercar la cultura y el arte a todos los segmentos sociales y a las distintas generaciones. Gracias a estas acciones, el Persa V\u00edctor Manuel fue ganador del Premio Nacional de Innovaci\u00f3n (AVONNI) en la categor\u00eda \u201cCultura\u201d el a\u00f1o 2019. Cabe destacar que el Premio Nacional de Innovaci\u00f3n Avonni es el reconocimiento honor\u00edfico m\u00e1s importante de Chile, que busca visibilizar los casos de \u00e9xito que est\u00e1n creando valor mediante la innovaci\u00f3n en distintos rubros. Riqueza cultural del Persa V\u00edctor Manuel La edificaci\u00f3n que sostiene al ic\u00f3nico Persa Victor Manuel es de car\u00e1cter hist\u00f3rico industrial y data desde principios del siglo XX. \u00c9sta fue construida para albergar una curtiembre y f\u00e1brica de cuero y calzados y ha sido reconvertida org\u00e1nicamente desde sus inicios, formando parte importante del Barrio Franklin, relacionado con el matadero y la zona t\u00edpica barrio Huemul. Muchas de sus obras retratan rostros de inmigrantes e ind\u00edgenas del Amazonas y utiliza m\u00faltiples colores seg\u00fan indica \u201cpara subir el \u00e1nimo de los chilenos\u201d. Alejandro, \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 instalaste en el persa la Galer\u00eda Taller del Mono? La idea de mi galer\u00eda no es solo exhibir obras de arte sino tambi\u00e9n conversar sobre grabados y sobre distintas t\u00e9cnicas de grabados. Esta es una idea de un taller que yo vi en Marsella en unos galpones iguales a \u00e9stos, y la idea es que las personas puedan ver c\u00f3mo se hace el producto que a ellos les gusta. \u00bfQu\u00e9 productos vendes?  Vendo serigraf\u00edas, xilograf\u00edas y grabados. Quiero destacar que yo nunca edito m\u00e1s de 100 obras, incluso ahora estoy haciendo serigraf\u00edas de 50, b\u00e1sicamente porque doy exclusividad para que  solo 50 personas tengan ese dise\u00f1o. La idea no es masificar, sino que haya variedad. Adem\u00e1s estamos haciendo que la galer\u00eda patrocine exposiciones en centros culturales fuera de esta comuna, o sea hemos llevado la exposici\u00f3n a Puente Alto, estuvimos tambi\u00e9n en San Joaqu\u00edn, estamos ahora llevando una a Puerto Natales, todo gracias a los v\u00ednculos y contactos que hemos ido haciendo en el persa. El persa m\u00e1s que negocio es un lugar de v\u00ednculos. \u00bfY antes d\u00f3nde estaba tu taller? Mi taller estaba en mi casa, pero aqu\u00ed estoy aprovechando otras cosas. Lo interesante del persa es que estamos en un galp\u00f3n donde venden otros productos, por ejemplo CDS, pel\u00edculas, juegos. Entonces la gente va a buscar eso y se encuentra con esto. Esta es una galer\u00eda para difundir el arte popular. \u00bfDe qu\u00e9 generaci\u00f3n son las personas que visitan tu galer\u00eda? Hay gente de edad que son profesionales, que compran obras de arte, o que son coleccionistas, pero tambi\u00e9n viene gente joven, reci\u00e9n titulados, profesionales, etc, que est\u00e1n armando sus casas o departamentos y est\u00e1n haciendo inversi\u00f3n en comprar arte, ya sea porque vieron murales en las calles o porque conocen el nombre. Ese p\u00fablico que viene es muy interesante. Adem\u00e1s por tu trayectoria ya tienes un p\u00fablico definido\u2026 S\u00ed, hay mucha gente que viene del extranjero, de Espa\u00f1a, Francia, Italia, Estados Unidos y Canad\u00e1. C\u00f3mo te hiciste conocido en el mundo del arte? Yo estudi\u00e9 arte, y soy escen\u00f3grafo. Hac\u00eda escenograf\u00edas para cine y televisi\u00f3n. Soy conocido en el cine, realic\u00e9 la escenograf\u00eda de algunas pel\u00edculas como \u201cMachuca\u201d, \u201cLa Fiebre del Loco\u201d, \u201cLa Frontera\u201d, entre otras. \u00bfViviste un tiempo fuera de Chile? No, pero viajo mucho. He estado pintando varias veces en Francia, en Espa\u00f1a, y  en Canad\u00e1. He pintado murales en museos internacionales. \u00bfHay alg\u00fan pa\u00eds en el que hayas inspirado tus obras? S\u00ed, Italia. He estado all\u00e1 varias veces. He viajado, me he nutrido, he aprendido, y adem\u00e1s he hecho amigos, muchos amigos. \u00bfLo pasas bien en el persa? Me entretengo. Si estuviera un s\u00e1bado o un domingo en mi casa, me aburrir\u00eda. Ac\u00e1 hablo todo el d\u00eda. \u00bfC\u00f3mo ves la proyecci\u00f3n del persa como un polo de arte urbano? \u00bfVes potencial? Por el p\u00fablico claro que lo hay. El arte urbano se caracteriza por estar en un lugar donde hay una gran cantidad de p\u00fablico. En la globalizaci\u00f3n hay mucho intercambio. \u00bfSiempre te has dedicado al mundo del arte? S\u00ed, siempre. Con sacrificio. Hay mucha gente que me pregunta por qu\u00e9 no estoy trabajando afuera, y  yo les digo \u201ceste es mi pa\u00eds\u201d, es mi casa. A este barrio yo ven\u00eda a comprar antes todos los fines de semanas. Este es un proyecto de viejo, para cerrar c\u00edrculos. \u00bfEs como volver al origen? Exacto. Eso tiene que ver con las identidades de territorio. \u00bfQu\u00e9 mensaje les dar\u00edas a las personas para que vengan a ver tus obras? Lo primero que encontrar\u00e1n es que podremos conversar, es decir, podr\u00e1n conversar directamente con el creador, invitarlos a que me pregunten y yo conocerlos tambi\u00e9n. Explicarles las obras, las t\u00e9cnicas. Es una galer\u00eda que difunde, pero adem\u00e1s educa\u2026y  yo tambi\u00e9n aprendo.
